Where to Recycle in the Estes Valley

This resources page outlines many of the recycling services available in the Estes Valley. Using these services will minimize the quantity and toxicity of the materials that are disposed in a landfill.  
Not all recyclables can be handled at our local facilities, so we include information about recycling locations in nearby communities.

Drop-Off Sites

Residential Recycling Center

Established through the work of Estes Recycles, in cooperation with the Town of Estes Park and Larimer County, the Residential Recycling Center is open to residents and visitors in the Estes Valley.  It accepts single-stream (mixed) recyclables. Accepted recyclables are: metal cans, glass, plastic bottles/jars/jugs/tubs only, newspaper, office paper, magazines, and paperboard. 

Shredded paper is not accepted; drop it at the transfer station for a fee. Common contaminants not accepted include plastic clamshells, plastic bags, Styrofoam, and recyclables with food debris.

How It Works 


1. Flatten all cardboard (double layer) for the cardboard-only container.
2. Place other acceptable items in one of the single stream bins (do not separate).

Estes Park Transfer Station

The Estes Park Transfer Station offers recycling and landfill drop off for area businesses. Fees     are assessed depending on the type and quantity of materials brought in.

Location:  640 Elm Road, Estes Park
  • Open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday 
  • Hours: 8:00 - 4:30 PM
  • Closed 12:00 noon to 12:30 pm for lunch

 Efficiency Works is excited to share we are offering FREE pick-up of old refrigerators and freezers through our Appliance Recycling Program. The shop will accept a wide range of items on consignment, if they are clean and operational, including: clothing, jewelry, linens, paired shoes, bedding, bicycles, toys, dishes, household items, decorations, and small appliances (toasters, coffee pots, blenders, blow dryers).

The shop takes clean, operational items in several categories:
  • Furniture--tables, chair, desks, bookshelves, sofas
  • Electronics--printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, VCRs, CD/DVD players
  • Small electronics--PDAs, gameboys, video gaming systems, cell phones, MP3s, speakers, keyboards, mice, cables, etc.
They do not accept  computers, TVs, or larger appliances--dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, space heaters, refrigerators.

Estes Recycles Day Volunteers
Once a year, the Community Recycling Committee sponsors a day where hard-to-recycle items can be dropped off for recycling right here in Estes Park. These typically include scrap metal, paint and paint-related products, electronics, paper shredding, and off-site mattress pick up. For details, go to the Estes Recycles Day page.


Many of the items accepted at Estes Recycles Day can be recycled year-round at CHaRM in Boulder. Fees may apply. See CHaRM details below under Boulder County in Beyond Estes Valley.

For items that are more difficult to recycle and not accepted at locations in Estes Valley, some facilities in nearby Larimer County and Boulder County communities accept a wider range of materials for recycling, as well as hazardous materials disposal.

Household hazardous wastes like pesticides, paint thinners and cleaners must be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at the Larimer County Landfill.

EcoCycle CHaRM: Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials

CHaRM collects unusual materials like electronics, plastic bags, small appliances, scrap metal, many miscellaneous materials, and compost for recycling and reuse. There is a per/vehicle fee for entering the Charm facility.
